Larisa Yurkiw

Larisa Yurkiw, born on March 30, 1988, in Owen Sound, Ontario, is a retired Canadian alpine ski racer renowned for her prowess in downhill and super-G events. She made her World Cup debut in January 2007 at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that would see her achieve significant milestones.

Throughout her career, Yurkiw demonstrated exceptional talent, culminating in a personal best second-place finish in downhill at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, in 2015. Over the years, she secured three additional World Cup podiums, showcasing her consistency and skill on the slopes. However, her journey was not without challenges; a severe crash during a training run at Val d'Isere in December 2009 resulted in multiple knee injuries, sidelining her from competing at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Before her ascent to the World Cup level, Yurkiw enjoyed a successful junior career, debuting on the Nor-Am Cup in March 2004 at her home club, Georgian Peaks. Between 2005 and 2009, she reached the podium seventeen times, claiming eight gold medals across various disciplines, excluding slalom. Her achievements also included a silver medal at the 2008 FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Formigal, Spain, and two gold medals at the Canadian National Championships in the same year.

Yurkiw's dedication to the sport was evident as she continued to excel, becoming the Canadian National Junior Champion in downhill, giant slalom, and slalom. After a stellar season in 2016, she announced her retirement on May 11, citing a desire to prioritize her health.
