Lars Hörmander

Lars Hörmander, born on January 24, 1931, is a distinguished Swedish mathematician renowned for his pivotal contributions to the modern theory of linear partial differential equations. His work has earned him the title of the foremost contributor in this field, reflecting his profound impact on mathematics.

In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Hörmander was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 1962, followed by the Wolf Prize in 1988. His scholarly excellence continued with the Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition in 2006, awarded for his comprehensive four-volume textbook, Analysis of Linear Partial Differential Operators, which is regarded as a foundational text in the discipline.

Hörmander completed his Ph.D. at Lund University in 1955, marking the beginning of a remarkable academic career. He held positions at esteemed institutions such as Stockholm University, Stanford University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1968, he returned to Lund University, where he served as a professor until his retirement in 1996, thereafter holding the title of professor emeritus.
