Laura Bridgman

Laura Bridgman, born on December twenty-first, eighteen twenty-nine, was a remarkable teacher, poet, and writer who made history as the first deaf-blind American child to receive a significant education in the English language. Her journey began at the tender age of two when she lost her sight and hearing due to scarlet fever, a life-altering event that would shape her future.

Bridgman's education took place at the prestigious Perkins Institution for the Blind, where she was guided by the visionary Samuel Gridley Howe. Under his mentorship, she mastered reading and communication through Braille and the manual alphabet created by Charles-Michel de l'Épée, paving the way for her to express herself and connect with the world around her.

Her achievements garnered attention, and for a time, she enjoyed celebrity status, particularly after meeting the renowned author Charles Dickens during his American tour in eighteen forty-two. Dickens highlighted her accomplishments in his work, American Notes, bringing her story to a wider audience. However, this fame was fleeting, and Bridgman spent the majority of her life in relative obscurity at the Perkins Institute.

Despite her challenges, Bridgman found solace in sewing and reading books in Braille, dedicating her life to learning and personal growth. Her legacy, though overshadowed by that of Helen Keller, remains a testament to her resilience and the pioneering spirit of those who strive to overcome adversity.
