Laura Chinchilla

Laura Chinchilla, born on March twenty-eighth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a distinguished Costa Rican politician and lawyer. She made history by becoming the first woman to serve as President of Costa Rica, holding office from May eighth, two thousand ten, to May eighth, two thousand fourteen. Prior to her presidency, she was one of the two Vice-Presidents under Óscar Arias Sánchez and also served as the Minister of Justice during his administration.

In the two thousand ten general election, Chinchilla emerged victorious as the governing PLN candidate, securing forty-six point seventy-six percent of the vote. Her election marked a significant milestone, as she became the eighth woman to lead a Latin American country, paving the way for future female leaders in the region.

After her presidency, Chinchilla transitioned into academia, teaching at Georgetown University in two thousand sixteen. She continues to influence public policy as co-chair of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank and serves as the vice-president of Club de Madrid. Additionally, she has held a fellowship at the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service, further contributing to her legacy in political science and governance.
