He was the son of Lithuanian Jewish parents and emigrated to South Africa at a young age. Over a span of twenty-five years, Harvey captivated audiences with his performances in stage, film, and television productions, primarily in the United Kingdom and the United States. He was renowned for his clipped, refined accent and his cool, debonair screen persona, which set him apart in the competitive world of acting.

His breakthrough role came in nineteen fifty-nine with his performance in Room at the Top, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. This success was quickly followed by notable roles in The Alamo and BUtterfield 8, both released in the autumn of nineteen sixty. Harvey's portrayal of the brainwashed Sergeant Raymond Shaw in The Manchurian Candidate in nineteen sixty-two further solidified his status as a leading actor of his time.

In nineteen sixty-three, he made his directorial debut with The Ceremony, showcasing his talents behind the camera as well. Harvey continued to act throughout the seventies until his untimely death in nineteen seventy-three due to cancer, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence actors today.
