Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Lauri Markkanen

Lauri Markkanen, born on May 22, 1997, is a prominent Finnish professional basketball player currently showcasing his talents with the Utah Jazz in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Known affectionately as 'the Finnisher', Lauri comes from a family deeply rooted in sports, being the son of former Finnish basketball players Pekka and Riikka Markkanen, and the younger brother of footballer Eero Markkanen.

Markkanen began his basketball journey with HBA-Märsky in Finland's second-tier league. His international career took off as he represented Finland at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket in 2015 and the FIBA U20 EuroBasket in 2016, where he distinguished himself as the top scorer in both tournaments. In pursuit of greater challenges, he moved to the United States to play college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats during the 2016–17 season, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors in his only year with the team.

In the 2017 NBA draft, Markkanen was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves but was quickly traded to the Chicago Bulls in a deal involving Jimmy Butler. After a period with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he found renewed success with the Jazz, culminating in his first All-Star selection and the Most Improved Player Award in 2023. Additionally, he led the Finnish national team during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup tournament.

Following two successful seasons with the Jazz, Markkanen secured a five-year contract extension with the franchise. His remarkable achievements were recognized when he was named the Finnish Athlete of the Year in 2023, marking a historic moment as the first basketball player to receive this prestigious award.
