Lawrence MacAulay

Lawrence A. MacAulay, born on September 9, 1946, is a prominent Canadian politician and agricultural entrepreneur, known for his extensive service in the House of Commons representing the riding of Cardigan, Prince Edward Island from 1988 until 2025. His political journey began with his election as a member of the Liberal Party, where he quickly rose through the ranks to hold significant cabinet positions under Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

In June 1997, MacAulay was appointed Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for Prince Edward Island, marking the start of his influential role in shaping labor policies. He later took on the role of Solicitor General of Canada in 1998, serving until his resignation in October 2002 amid a conflict of interest inquiry. Despite this setback, he continued to serve as a backbench MP and later as an opposition member during the Conservative government from 2006 to 2015.

MacAulay made history on March 20, 2014, by becoming the longest-serving MP in Prince Edward Island's history, surpassing the previous record held by Angus MacLean. His dedication to public service was further recognized when he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food in November 2015 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He later transitioned to the role of Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence in March 2019, before returning to agriculture in July 2023.

As he approached the end of his political career, MacAulay announced on March 1, 2025, that he would not seek re-election. He resides in Midgell, Prince Edward Island, with his wife, Frances, where he continues to be an influential figure in both politics and agriculture.
