Laza Kostić

Laza Kostić, born on February twelfth, eighteen forty-one, was a multifaceted Serbian intellectual whose contributions spanned various fields including poetry, journalism, and law. Renowned as one of the most significant figures in Serbian literature, Kostić's literary output includes approximately one hundred and fifty lyrics, twenty epic poems, three dramas, and numerous essays and short stories.

His passion for literature extended beyond his own writing; Kostić was a fervent advocate for the study of English literature in Serbia. Alongside Jovan Andrejević-Joles, he played a pivotal role in the systematic translation of William Shakespeare's works into the Serbian language, thereby introducing the Bard's profound influence to Serbian culture.

In addition to his literary endeavors, Kostić was a prominent politician and publicist, engaging actively in the cultural and political discourse of his time. His work as a theatre critic and art critic further showcased his diverse talents and deep understanding of aesthetics, making him a well-rounded figure in the Serbian cultural landscape.
