Le Corbusier

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, widely known as Le Corbusier, was born on October sixth, eighteen eighty-seven, in Switzerland to French-speaking Swiss parents. He later acquired French nationality in nineteen thirty. Over a remarkable five-decade career, Le Corbusier emerged as a pioneering figure in modern architecture, leaving an indelible mark on the architectural landscape across Europe, Japan, India, and the Americas.

Le Corbusier was not only an architect but also a painter, urban planner, and writer. His commitment to improving living conditions in densely populated cities led him to become a founding member of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Among his notable contributions was the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India, where he designed several significant government buildings.

In two thousand sixteen, seventeen of Le Corbusier's projects across seven countries were recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, collectively titled The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement. His innovative designs extended beyond architecture to include iconic furniture pieces like the LC4 chaise longue and the LC1 chair, showcasing his versatility as a designer.

Despite his achievements, Le Corbusier remains a controversial figure. His urban planning concepts have faced criticism for overlooking existing cultural sites and societal needs. Additionally, his alleged associations with fascism, antisemitism, and eugenics have sparked ongoing debates about his legacy.
