Lee Strasberg

Lee Strasberg, born on November seventeenth, nineteen oh one, was an influential Austro-Hungarian-born American actor, director, and teacher. He co-founded the Group Theatre in nineteen thirty-one alongside notable theatre directors Harold Clurman and Cheryl Crawford, which was recognized as America's first true theatrical collective. His contributions to the world of acting were profound, particularly through his role as the director of the Actors Studio in New York City starting in nineteen fifty-one, a position that solidified the studio's reputation as the nation's most prestigious acting school.

Strasberg is often hailed as the father of method acting in America, a title attributed to him by author Mel Gussow. His innovative approach to acting revolutionized performance in American theater and film from the nineteen twenties until his passing in nineteen eighty-two. Throughout his career, he trained several generations of notable actors, including Marlon Brando, Anne Bancroft, and Al Pacino, among many others, leaving an indelible mark on the craft.

In nineteen seventy, Strasberg began to step back from the Actors Studio and, with his third wife Anna, established the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. This institution, with branches in New York City and Hollywood, continued to teach the Stanislavski system, which Strasberg had interpreted and adapted for contemporary actors.

As an actor, Strasberg is perhaps best remembered for his role as the gangster Hyman Roth in The Godfather Part II, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
