Leevan Sands

Leevan Sands, born on August sixteenth, nineteen eighty-one, is a distinguished Bahamian triple jumper known for his remarkable achievements in athletics. His personal best jump of seventeen point fifty-nine metres, achieved during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, not only secured him a bronze medal but also established a Bahamian record that still stands today.

Sands' athletic journey began at Florida Air Academy, where he honed his skills before joining the Auburn Tigers track and field team. His collegiate career was marked by significant accomplishments, including winning the NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships titles in both the long jump in two thousand three and the triple jump in two thousand four. Additionally, he was a runner-up in the triple jump at the two thousand three championships and initially placed third in the long jump at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, later being promoted to second after a competitor's disqualification.

Despite facing challenges, including a suspension in two thousand six for testing positive for a prohibited substance, Sands continued to represent the Bahamas on the international stage. He competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he served as the flag bearer during the closing ceremonies, although he did not qualify for the finals.

In addition to his individual accolades, Sands shares a familial connection to athletics as the cousin of hurdler Shamar Sands, who also holds a Bahamian record in his event. Throughout his professional career, he was coached by Henry Rolle, who played a pivotal role in his development as an elite athlete.
