Leigh Brackett, born on December seventh, nineteen fifteen, was a pioneering American author and screenwriter, celebrated for her significant contributions to the realms of science fiction and film. Often referred to as 'the Queen of Space Opera', she emerged as one of the most influential female writers during the Golden Age of Science Fiction, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.

Brackett's screenwriting prowess shone through her collaborations with renowned director Howard Hawks, where she crafted compelling narratives for Westerns and crime films. Her versatility extended to the science fiction genre, where she worked on an early draft of the iconic film The Empire Strikes Back, contributing elements that would ultimately remain in the final production, despite her passing before it was completed.

In nineteen fifty-six, Brackett's novel The Long Tomorrow made history as she became the first woman ever shortlisted for the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Alongside C. L. Moore, she was among the first two women nominated for this prestigious accolade, paving the way for future generations of female writers in science fiction.

Her legacy continued to be recognized posthumously, as in twenty twenty, she was awarded a Retro Hugo for her novel The Nemesis From Terra, originally published as Shadow Over Mars in the fall of nineteen forty-four. Brackett's work remains a testament to her talent and influence in both literature and film.
