Leo Baeck

Leo Baeck, born on May twenty-third, eighteen seventy-three, was a prominent figure in the realm of philosophy, education, and theology. As a rabbi and university teacher, he dedicated his life to the advancement of Reform Judaism, both in Germany and on the international stage. His leadership during the tumultuous Nazi era was pivotal, as he represented the interests and welfare of all German Jews during a time of great peril.

After the conclusion of the Second World War, Baeck relocated to London, where he continued his influential work as the chairman of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. In nineteen fifty-five, the Leo Baeck Institute was established, dedicated to the study of the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry. Baeck served as its first international president, further solidifying his legacy as a scholar and advocate for Jewish culture. The Leo Baeck Medal, awarded since nineteen seventy-eight, honors individuals who have significantly contributed to preserving the spirit of German-speaking Jewry across various fields, including culture, academia, politics, and philanthropy.
