Léo Cadieux

Léo Cadieux, born on May twenty-eighth, nineteen oh eight, in Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, was a prominent Canadian journalist, politician, and diplomat. His career in politics began when he was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Terrebonne, Quebec, during the nineteen sixty-two election, marking the start of a significant journey in public service.

In nineteen sixty-five, Cadieux was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as the Associate Minister of National Defence, a role that paved the way for his promotion to Minister of National Defence in nineteen sixty-seven. Notably, he became the first Francophone to hold this esteemed position, serving under both Pearson and Pierre Trudeau until his retirement from politics in nineteen seventy.

Upon leaving Parliament, Cadieux took on the role of Canada’s Ambassador to France, a position he held until nineteen seventy-five. His tenure as Defence Minister was marked by pivotal decisions, including a reduction of Canada’s troop commitment to Europe and a reevaluation of the country’s defence priorities, particularly regarding nuclear deterrence.

Cadieux's contributions to Canadian civil defence were significant, overseeing the reorganization of the Canadian Emergency Measures Organization. In recognition of his service, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in nineteen seventy-four, solidifying his legacy in Canadian history.
