Leo Panitch

Leo Panitch, born on May third, nineteen forty-five, was a distinguished Canadian political scientist and economist, renowned for his contributions to the field of political economy. He held the position of research professor at York University, where he also served as a Canada Research Chair in comparative political economy. His academic journey was marked by a commitment to exploring the dynamics of global capitalism and its implications for democracy and socialism.

From nineteen eighty-five until the twenty twenty-one edition, Panitch co-edited the Socialist Register, a publication dedicated to surveying movements and ideas from the perspective of the independent new left. He believed that the Register played a pivotal role in shaping Marxism's conceptual framework, advocating for a democratic, cooperative, and egalitarian socialist alternative to the challenges posed by capitalist competition and exploitation.

In two thousand two, Panitch's appointment as a Canada Research Chair allowed him to delve deeper into the intricacies of globalization, which he argued was primarily driven by the American state through institutions like the US Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve. He characterized globalization as a form of imperialism, asserting that the American Empire operates informally, establishing trade and investment rules in collaboration with other sovereign yet less powerful capitalist nations.

His influential work, The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire, co-authored with Sam Gindin in two thousand twelve, chronicles over a century of American-led globalization. This book garnered significant acclaim, winning the Deutscher Memorial Prize in the United Kingdom in two thousand thirteen and the Rik Davidson/SPE Book Prize in two thousand fourteen for the best book in political economy by a Canadian. Throughout his career, Panitch authored more than one hundred scholarly articles and nine books, including Working-Class Politics in Crisis: Essays on Labour and the State, The End of Parliamentary Socialism: From New Left to New Labour, and Renewing Socialism: Transforming Democracy, Strategy and Imagination, where he critiqued the inherent injustices of capitalism.
