Leo Peelen

Leo Peelen, born on July 16, 1968, was a distinguished Dutch track cyclist known for his remarkable achievements in the sport. He gained international recognition when he secured a silver medal in the points race at the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in his cycling career, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.

In addition to his Olympic success, Peelen continued to excel on the world stage, earning a bronze medal at the 1989 World Championships. His prowess on the track was further demonstrated by his impressive record of becoming a six-time Dutch champion, winning titles in various events including the Points Race in 1983, 1984, and 1985 (winter), as well as the Individual Pursuit in 1986 and the Madison in 1987 and 1988.

Beyond his competitive achievements, Peelen was actively involved in promoting cycling within his community. He served as the chairman of the organization responsible for the annual time trial and cycling festival in Beek, contributing to the growth and popularity of the sport at the grassroots level.

Peelen's commitment to cycling extended beyond competition; he was one of the 66 riders who participated in the inaugural Alpe d'HuZes event on June 6, 2006. During this challenging endeavor, he climbed the iconic Alpe d'Huez six times, helping to raise four hundred thousand euros for the Dutch Cancer Society, demonstrating his dedication to both sport and philanthropy.

Tragically, Leo Peelen passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2017, at the age of forty-eight, leaving behind a legacy of athletic excellence and community service.
