Leo V the Armenian

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Leo V the Armenian

Leo V the Armenian, a prominent Byzantine emperor, ruled from eight hundred thirteen to eight hundred twenty. His reign is particularly noted for the conclusion of a prolonged conflict with the Bulgars, marking a significant turning point in Byzantine military history.

Before ascending to the throne, Leo distinguished himself as a senior general of Armenian descent, serving under emperors Nikephoros I and Michael I Rhangabe. His military prowess was evident as he rose to the position of stratēgos of the Anatolic Theme, where he played a crucial role in the Byzantine defense.

Taking advantage of Michael's defeat at the Battle of Versinikia, Leo successfully forced the emperor to abdicate, allowing him to claim the throne. He effectively managed to lift the blockade of Constantinople imposed by Krum of Bulgaria and, following Krum's death, negotiated a thirty-year peace with his successor, Omurtag.

In the year eight hundred fifteen, Leo made a controversial decision to depose Patriarch Nikephoros, reinstating the practice of iconoclasm. His reign, however, was cut short when he was assassinated by supporters of Michael the Amorian, one of his most trusted generals, who subsequently succeeded him in eight hundred twenty.
