Leonel Mário d'Alva, born on July twenty-second, nineteen thirty-five, is a prominent figure in São Toméan politics and diplomacy. He played a pivotal role in the country's transition to independence, serving as the prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe from December twenty-first, nineteen seventy-four, until July twelfth, nineteen seventy-five, the date marking the end of Portuguese colonial rule.
Following his tenure as prime minister, d'Alva held the position of Minister of Economic Coordination for a brief period from July to December nineteen seventy-five. His leadership continued as he became the President of the São Toméan National Assembly from late nineteen seventy-five until nineteen eighty, a role he would return to after the first democratic elections in nineteen ninety-one.
In addition to his legislative roles, d'Alva served as the foreign minister from nineteen seventy-five to nineteen seventy-eight and briefly acted as president from March fourth to April third, nineteen ninety-one. His political journey also includes co-founding the Democratic Convergence Party – Reflection Group (PCD–RG) in nineteen ninety-one, which he led for many years, shaping the political landscape of São Tomé and Príncipe.
