Leonhard Frank

Leonhard Frank, born on September fourth, eighteen eighty-two, was a prominent German expressionist writer whose works resonated deeply with the tumultuous times he lived in. Initially studying painting and graphic art in Munich, he transitioned to literature, gaining recognition with his debut novel, The Robber Band, published in nineteen fourteen and translated in nineteen twenty-eight.

Frank's life took a dramatic turn when he confronted a Berlin journalist celebrating the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, leading to a physical altercation that prompted his exile to Switzerland from nineteen fifteen to nineteen eighteen. During this period, he penned a collection of pacifist short stories titled Man is Good, reflecting his disillusionment with war.

After returning to Germany, Frank faced persecution following the rise of the Nazis in nineteen thirty-three, forcing him to emigrate once more. His journey took him back to Switzerland, then to London, Paris, and ultimately to the United States in nineteen forty. He returned to Munich in nineteen fifty, where he continued to write.

Among his notable works are In the Last Coach, published in nineteen twenty-five and translated in nineteen thirty-five, and Carl and Anna, which he adapted for the stage in nineteen twenty-nine. His story Carl and Anna was later adapted into a film titled Desire Me by MGM in nineteen forty-seven, further cementing his legacy in the literary and cinematic worlds.
