Leopold III of Belgium

Leopold III of Belgium, born on November third, nineteen oh one, served as the King of the Belgians from February twenty-third, nineteen thirty-four until his abdication on July sixteenth, nineteen fifty-one. His reign was marked by significant challenges, particularly during World War II, when he attempted to uphold Belgian neutrality. However, following the German invasion in May nineteen forty, he made the controversial decision to surrender, which led to widespread animosity both domestically and internationally.

In the wake of his surrender, Leopold faced severe political repercussions. Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot and his cabinet deemed his actions unconstitutional and fled to London to establish a government-in-exile. Meanwhile, Leopold and his family were placed under house arrest by the Germans, later being relocated to Germany and Austria until their liberation by American forces. His return to Belgium in nineteen fifty was fraught with tension, nearly igniting a civil war, as calls for a secessionist republic in Wallonia intensified. Ultimately, under governmental pressure, he abdicated in favor of his son Baudouin in July nineteen fifty-one.

Leopold's personal life was equally tumultuous. His first wife, Astrid of Sweden, tragically died in a road accident in August nineteen thirty-five, an event that deeply affected the public and left Leopold with minor injuries. His second marriage to Lilian Baels, conducted in captivity in nineteen forty-one, was morganatic and contravened Belgian law, as the civil marriage was required to precede the religious ceremony. Despite their initial intention to delay the civil marriage until after the war, the couple was compelled to marry sooner due to Lilian's pregnancy, which took place on December sixth, nineteen forty-one.
