LeRoy Samse

LeRoy Samse, born on September 13, 1883, was a distinguished American athlete renowned for his prowess in the pole vault. He made his mark on the international stage by representing the United States at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, where he secured a silver medal in his event, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.

Samse's athletic journey began at Kokomo High School, where he honed his skills from 1899 to 1902. He later enrolled at Indiana University, where he was introduced to pole vaulting by the esteemed coach James H. Horne. His commitment to the sport led him to set a world record at a Western Intercollegiate Conference meet in Evanston, Illinois, on June 2, 1906, with an impressive vault of twelve feet and four and seven-eighths inches, surpassing the previous record set just days earlier.

After completing his education, Samse embarked on a unique career, performing with a triple bar horizontal act followed by an aerial act that entertained audiences at county fairs. His passion for physical education led him to a significant role as the Physical Education director in the Los Angeles school system, a position he held until his retirement in 1946.

In 2009, Indiana University honored Samse's legacy by hosting the inaugural LeRoy Samse Invitational, a unique event where vaulters compete using non-bending poles reminiscent of those used during Samse's era. The meet celebrated his remarkable achievement, with the record still reflecting his personal best of twelve feet and four and seven-eighths inches.
