Les Kurbas

Les Kurbas, born on February twenty-fifth, eighteen eighty-seven, was a pioneering Ukrainian figure in the realms of theater and film. Renowned as an actor, theatrical director, film director, playwright, translator, and theatrologist, Kurbas is celebrated as one of the most significant Ukrainian theater directors of the twentieth century.

In the vibrant cultural landscape of the 1920s and 1930s, Kurbas emerged as a key player in the Soviet theater avant-garde, collaborating with luminaries such as Vsevolod Meyerhold and Yevgeny Vakhtangov. His innovative approach and artistic vision positioned him as a prominent representative of Ukrainian avant-garde art, influencing generations of artists and theater practitioners.

Tragically, Kurbas's life was cut short by the oppressive forces of the Soviet regime during Stalin's Great Terror.
