Leslie Claudius

Leslie Claudius, born on March twenty-fifth, nineteen twenty-seven, was a distinguished Indian field hockey and ice hockey player hailing from Bilaspur. He received his education at the South Eastern Railway English Medium School in Bilaspur, an institution renowned for nurturing numerous national sports talents.

Claudius is celebrated for his remarkable achievement of winning four Olympic medals in field hockey, a feat he shares with fellow athlete Udham Singh. His illustrious career includes gold medals from the nineteen forty-eight, nineteen fifty-two, and nineteen fifty-six Olympics, along with a silver medal in nineteen sixty, where he captained the Indian team to the finals against Pakistan.

Notably, he was the first player to earn one hundred caps for India, showcasing his dedication and skill on the field. Beyond the Olympics, Claudius represented India on various international tours, including Europe in nineteen forty-nine, Malaysia in nineteen fifty-two, and Australia and New Zealand in nineteen fifty-five, as well as at the third Asian Games in nineteen fifty-eight.

After the nineteen sixty Olympics, he continued to compete at the domestic level until his retirement in nineteen sixty-five. In recognition of his contributions to Indian hockey, he was awarded the Padma Shri Civil award by the Indian government in nineteen seventy-one, becoming the sixth Indian hockey player to receive this honor.

In addition to his sports career, Claudius served in the Calcutta Customs Department, starting as a Preventive Officer and retiring as an Assistant Collector of Customs. He was an active member of the Calcutta Customs Club, representing the Calcutta Port Customs Commissionerate in the Aga Khan Tournament in nineteen forty-eight, further solidifying his legacy in Indian sports.
