Leslie Howard Steiner, known simply as Leslie Howard, was born on April 3, 1893, and became a prominent figure in the world of theatre and film. An English actor, director, producer, and writer, Howard captivated audiences with his performances and was one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1930s. His talent extended beyond acting; he was also a prolific writer, contributing stories and articles to esteemed publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair.

Howard's career spanned both Britain and Hollywood, where he gained fame for his role as Ashley Wilkes in the iconic film Gone with the Wind in 1939. His filmography includes notable works such as Berkeley Square, Of Human Bondage, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Petrified Forest, Pygmalion, Intermezzo, and Pimpernel Smith. His performances in Berkeley Square and Pygmalion earned him nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor, and he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for Pygmalion.

During the Second World War, Howard's contributions extended to acting and filmmaking, where he played a crucial role in creating anti-German propaganda and bolstering support for the Allies. There were also rumors of his involvement with British or Allied Intelligence, which fueled conspiracy theories surrounding his untimely death in 1943.

Tragically, Howard's life was cut short when the Luftwaffe shot down BOAC Flight 777 over the Atlantic, off the coast of Cedeira, A Coruña, while he was a passenger. His legacy as a talented actor and filmmaker continues to resonate, marking him as a significant figure in cinematic history.
