Lester Carney, born on March thirty-first, nineteen thirty-four, is a distinguished retired American sprinter celebrated for his remarkable achievements in athletics. He gained international recognition when he secured a silver medal in the two hundred meters at the nineteen sixty Summer Olympics, outperforming two of his teammates who had previously bested him at the Olympic trials. His prowess on the track was further highlighted by another silver medal in the same event at the nineteen fifty-nine Pan American Games.
In addition to his sprinting career, Carney showcased his athletic versatility by playing American football at Ohio University. His talent on the gridiron led to his selection by the Baltimore Colts in nineteen fifty-eight, although he ultimately did not pursue a professional career in football.
After retiring from competitive sports, Carney transitioned into the business world, taking on the role of a buyer for sporting goods at the M. O'Neil Co. department store chain located in Akron, Ohio. His contributions to the sports community were honored on October second, two thousand fifteen, when Indian Creek High School, formerly known as Wintersville High School, named its new track and field after him. The facility is now proudly known as the Lester Carney Track at Kettlewell Stadium.
