Lester R. Brown

Lester R. Brown, born on March twenty-eighth, nineteen thirty-four, is a prominent American agronomist, writer, naturalist, farmer, and environmentalist. He is best known as the founder of the Worldwatch Institute and the Earth Policy Institute, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C. Recognized as one of the great pioneer environmentalists by BBC Radio commentator Peter Day, Brown has dedicated his life to addressing global environmental challenges.

With over fifty books to his name, many of which have been translated into more than forty languages, Brown's influence is far-reaching. His most recent work, The Great Transition: Shifting from Fossil Fuels to Solar and Wind Energy, published in two thousand fifteen, discusses the ongoing shift from fossil and nuclear energy to renewable sources. In his earlier book, Full Planet, Empty Plates: The New Geopolitics of Food Scarcity, released in two thousand twelve, he highlights the geopolitical implications of rising grain prices and the potential for food crises to destabilize nations.

Throughout his career, Brown has received numerous accolades, including twenty-six honorary degrees and a MacArthur Fellowship. The Washington Post has described him as one of the world's most influential thinkers. His early warnings about environmental degradation, such as those in his nineteen seventy-eight book The Twenty-Ninth Day, have been pivotal in shaping discussions around population and resource issues. In two thousand three, he was a signatory of the Humanist Manifesto.

In the mid-seventies, Brown was instrumental in pioneering the concept of sustainable development, a journey that began with his roots in farming. His contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including the United Nations Environment Prize in nineteen eighty-seven and the Blue Planet Prize in nineteen ninety-four. Recently, he was honored with the Presidential Medal of Italy and appointed as an honorary professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
