Levina Teerlinc

Levina Teerlinc, born in 1510, was a distinguished Flemish Renaissance miniaturist whose artistry flourished at the English court. Serving under the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, she became the most significant miniaturist in England, bridging the gap between the renowned Hans Holbein the Younger and the celebrated Nicholas Hilliard.

Teerlinc's artistic lineage is notable; she was the daughter of Simon Bening, a prominent book illuminator and miniature painter associated with the Ghent-Bruges school. It is likely that her father played a crucial role in her early training as a manuscript painter, imparting skills that would later define her illustrious career.

Before her marriage, Teerlinc may have honed her craft in her father's workshop, where she developed the intricate techniques that would captivate the English court.
