Leyla Hussein, born in 1980, is a prominent Somali-born British psychotherapist and social activist. She has dedicated her career to advocating for the rights of women and girls, particularly in relation to issues of female genital mutilation and mental health.

As the founder of the Dahlia Project, Hussein has created a vital support network for women affected by female genital mutilation. Additionally, she is one of the co-founders of the Daughters of Eve, a non-profit organization that aims to protect and empower women and girls from harmful practices.

In 2020, Hussein made history by being elected as the Rector of the University of St Andrews, becoming the third woman and the first woman of color to hold this prestigious position. Despite her groundbreaking achievement, her tenure was met with significant criticism due to perceived shortcomings in her involvement in the role.

Currently, she serves as the Chief Executive of Hawa's Haven, furthering her commitment to social justice and mental health advocacy.
