Liang Kai, a prominent painter of the Southern Song Dynasty, was born in Shandong in the year twelve hundred. Known affectionately as Madman Liang, he gained recognition for his informal and expressive style, which set him apart from his contemporaries.
His artistic journey led him to Lin An, now known as Hangzhou, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of the esteemed master Jia Shigu. Liang's dedication to his craft earned him the prestigious title of Painter-in-Attendance at the court of Jia Tai, a position he held from twelve hundred one to twelve hundred four.
During his time at court, Liang Kai showcased his exceptional talent in painting figures, landscapes, and various minor subjects. His artistry was so revered that he was awarded the Golden Belt, a symbol of his achievements. However, in a remarkable turn of events, he chose to leave this honor behind to pursue a life dedicated to Chan Buddhism, reflecting his deep spiritual convictions.
