Lil' Kim

Kimberly Denise Jones, known to the world as Lil' Kim, was born on July 11, 1974, in New York City. Rising from a challenging upbringing, she found her voice in the streets, honing her freestyle skills while drawing inspiration from trailblazing female hip-hop artists like MC Lyte and the Lady of Rage. Her big break came in 1994 when she was discovered by the iconic Notorious B.I.G., who invited her to join Junior M.A.F.I.A. Their debut album, Conspiracy, marked a significant milestone, generating two top twenty singles and earning a gold certification from the RIAA.

In 1996, Lil' Kim released her groundbreaking debut album, Hard Core, which shattered records as the highest debut for a female rap album in the United States at that time. The album, featuring hits like 'No Time' and 'Crush on You', achieved double platinum status and sold over six million copies globally. During this period, she embraced the moniker 'Queen Bee', solidifying her status in the hip-hop realm. Her subsequent album, The Notorious K.I.M., released in 2000, continued her streak of success, highlighted by the Grammy-winning single 'Lady Marmalade'.

Despite facing legal challenges, including a one-year prison sentence in 2005 for lying to a jury, Lil' Kim's resilience shone through. While incarcerated, she released her fourth album, The Naked Truth, which received critical acclaim. Following her release, she made a notable return to the spotlight with her reality series, Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown, and her first mixtape, Ms. G.O.A.T., in 2008. Throughout the 2010s, she maintained her presence in the music industry, collaborating with various artists and releasing her fifth studio album, 9, in 2019.

Beyond her musical achievements, Lil' Kim is celebrated as a fashion icon, known for her bold and luxurious style. Her collaboration with nail artist Bernadette Thompson in 1999 introduced intricate nail art to mainstream fashion, with pieces even showcased at the Museum of Modern Art. Recognized for her contributions to hip-hop, her tracks 'No Time', 'Big Momma Thang', and 'Not Tonight (Ladies Night)' have been featured in Complex's list of the 50 Best Rap Songs By Women.
