Liliya Shobukhova

Liliya Shobukhova, born on November thirteenth, nineteen seventy-seven, is a retired Russian long-distance runner renowned for her remarkable achievements in marathon races. Initially specializing in the 3000 and 5000 meters track events, she made her mark in athletics starting in two thousand one, reaching the finals at both the European Indoor Championships and the European Athletics Championships in two thousand two.

Shobukhova's career took a significant turn when she represented Russia at the two thousand four Athens Olympics, where she reached the final in the 5000 meters. Her breakthrough came in two thousand six, as she secured silver medals at the IAAF World Indoor Championships and the European Athletics Championships, establishing herself as a formidable competitor on the international stage.

Transitioning to road races, she achieved notable success by winning the Prague Half Marathon in two thousand seven. Shobukhova continued to excel, reaching the 5000 meters final at the two thousand eight Beijing Olympics. Her focus on road racing proved fruitful, as she triumphed at the Chicago Marathon three consecutive times from two thousand nine to two thousand eleven, along with a victory at the two thousand ten London Marathon.

Her personal best time of two hours, eighteen minutes, and twenty seconds was once the Russian record for the marathon, making her the second fastest woman ever, trailing only Paula Radcliffe. However, her achievements were marred by a doping ban that lasted until August twenty-third, two thousand fifteen, resulting in the annulment of her race results since October ninth, two thousand nine, due to biological passport abnormalities.

In addition to her marathon successes, Shobukhova held the world indoor record in the 3000 meters and was a former European record holder in both the 3000 and 5000 meters, showcasing her versatility and talent across various distances.
