Lillian Dyck

Dr. Lillian Eva Quan Dyck, born on August twenty-four, nineteen forty-five, is a distinguished Canadian biologist, neuroscientist, and retired senator from Saskatchewan. As a member of the Cree Gordon First Nation and a first-generation Chinese Canadian, she holds the remarkable distinction of being the first female First Nations senator and the first Canadian-born senator of Chinese descent.

Before her appointment to the Senate, Dyck made significant contributions to the field of neuroscience at the University of Saskatchewan, where she also served as an associate dean. Her academic journey is particularly notable as she is among the first Aboriginal women in Canada to pursue a career in the sciences. In recognition of her outstanding achievements, she was honored with a lifetime achievement award by Indspire on March twelfth, nineteen ninety-nine.

In addition to her research and teaching roles, Dr. Dyck has been a passionate advocate for equity in education and employment, focusing on the rights of women, Chinese Canadians, and Aboriginal peoples. Her commitment to these causes was further acknowledged in two thousand nineteen when she received the Women of Distinction Awards Lifetime Achievement Award from the YWCA Saskatoon.

Even after her retirement from the Senate, Dr. Dyck continues to inspire future generations by teaching at the university and conducting research on a part-time basis, leaving a lasting impact on both her students and the broader community.
