Lin Zexu

Lin Zexu, born on 30 August 1785 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, was a prominent Chinese political philosopher and politician. He served as a Viceroy and Governor General under the Daoguang Emperor during the Qing dynasty. Lin is best remembered for his staunch opposition to the opium trade, which played a pivotal role in the onset of the First Opium War from 1839 to 1842.

As a scholar-official, Lin Zexu was known for his unwavering commitment to moral principles in his fight against opium. His efforts to eradicate the drug trade were endorsed by the Emperor, who supported Lin's hardline policies. However, the Emperor ultimately placed the blame for the ensuing conflict on Lin, despite the complexities surrounding the issue.

Lin's legacy is multifaceted; while he is celebrated as a cultural hero and a symbol of resistance against drug abuse in China, he is also critiqued for his rigid approach that overlooked the intricate domestic and international dynamics at play.
