Linda A. Morabito

Linda A. Morabito, born on November 21, 1953, is a distinguished astronomer renowned for her groundbreaking discovery of volcanic activity on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. This remarkable finding occurred on March 9, 1979, while she was working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the Cognizant Engineer overseeing the Optical Navigation Image Processing System (ONIPS) for the Voyager deep space mission Navigation Team.

During her analysis of an image captured by Voyager 1, Morabito identified a towering cloud, measuring two hundred seventy kilometers in height, which was later confirmed to be of volcanic origin. This pivotal moment marked the first detection of active volcanism beyond Earth, a milestone that some planetary scientists regard as the most significant discovery from the planetary exploration program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Today, Morabito serves as an associate professor of astronomy at Victor Valley College, where she continues to inspire the next generation of scientists. In addition to her academic contributions, she has authored a memoir titled 'Parallel Universes, a Memoir from the Edges of Space and Time,' sharing her unique experiences and insights from her illustrious career.
