Lindsay E. Sparkes, born on August 6, 1950, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, is a distinguished Canadian curler whose remarkable career has left an indelible mark on the sport. Known for her competitive spirit and skill, Sparkes has achieved the prestigious titles of three-time Canadian champion, world champion, and Olympic demonstration champion.
Her journey in curling began in 1976 when she led her team, which included Dawn Knowles, Robin Klassen, and Lorraine Bowles, to victory in both the provincial and national championships. This triumph set the stage for their participation in the inaugural 1979 Royal Bank of Scotland World Women's Curling Championship, where they reached the semi-finals but were narrowly defeated by Switzerland.
In 1984, Sparkes formed a new team with Linda Moore, Debbie Orr, and Laurie Carney, securing her third provincial title and finishing third at the national championship, then known as the Tournament of Hearts. The following season, a strategic position switch with Moore led to another provincial title and culminated in a victory at the 1985 Scott Tournament of Hearts, where they triumphed over Newfoundland in the final. Their success continued at the World Championships, where they claimed the gold medal by defeating Scotland.
In 1988, Sparkes and her team were selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee to represent Canada in curling at the Winter Olympics, where it was featured as a demonstration sport. They achieved a remarkable victory, winning the gold medal against Sweden in the final. Sparkes' illustrious career saw its final appearance at the Hearts in 1997, where she served as an alternate for the Kelley Owen (Law) rink.
