Lisa Appignanesi

Lisa Appignanesi, born on January fourth, nineteen forty-six, is a distinguished Polish-born British-Canadian writer, journalist, and campaigner for free expression. Her extensive career encompasses roles as a novelist, literary critic, television producer, and university teacher, showcasing her diverse talents and commitment to literature.

Until two thousand twenty-one, she served as the Chair of the Royal Society of Literature and has held prominent positions such as the President of English PEN and Chair of the Freud Museum London. Notably, she chaired the two thousand seventeen Man Booker International Prize, which was awarded to the acclaimed author Olga Tokarczuk.

Appignanesi is a founding editor of the website EXPeditions and chairs its editorial advisory board. She is also an Honorary Fellow of St Benet's Hall, Oxford, and a visiting professor in the Department of English at King's College London, where she received a Wellcome Trust People Award for her public series on The Brain and the Mind.

Her influential book, Mad, Bad, and Sad: A History of Women and the Mind Doctors, garnered the two thousand nine British Medical Association Award for the Public Understanding of Science, among other accolades. In addition to her writing, she has contributed to esteemed publications such as The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, and The Observer, and has made numerous appearances on BBC programs.
