Lisa Lopes

Lisa Nicole Lopes, born on May 27, 1971, was an influential American rapper and singer-songwriter, best known by her stage name Left Eye. As a prominent member of the iconic R&B girl group TLC, she collaborated with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, contributing significantly to the group's creative direction. Lopes was not only a talented rapper but also the driving force behind many of TLC's hits, earning more co-writing credits than her fellow members.

Beyond her contributions to TLC, Lopes showcased her artistic vision by designing outfits and staging for the group's FanMail Tour. Her influence extended to the group's image, album titles, artworks, and music videos, which played a crucial role in their success. Throughout her career with TLC, Lopes was honored with four Grammy Awards, solidifying her legacy in the music industry.

In her brief solo career, Lopes achieved remarkable success with two US top ten singles, "Not Tonight" and "U Know What's Up," along with a UK number-one single, "Never Be the Same Again," featuring Melanie C from the Spice Girls. Additionally, she produced the girl group Blaque, which enjoyed a platinum album and two US top ten hits, further demonstrating her multifaceted talent.

Tragically, Lopes's life was cut short when she died in a car crash in Honduras on April 25, 2002, while volunteering at a children's development center. The accident occurred when she lost control of her rental SUV while swerving to avoid a truck, and she was the only passenger not wearing a seatbelt. The documentary "The Last Days of Left Eye" was released in May 2007, providing a glimpse into her life and legacy.
