Lisa P. Jackson

Lisa P. Jackson, born on February eighth, nineteen sixty-two, is a distinguished American chemical engineer and politician. She made history as the first African American to serve as the administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from two thousand nine to two thousand thirteen.

Her career in environmental protection began in two thousand two when she joined the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. There, she held the positions of assistant commissioner of compliance and enforcement, as well as assistant commissioner for land use management. In two thousand six, she was appointed by New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine as the state's commissioner of environmental protection, a role that showcased her leadership in environmental issues.

In December of two thousand eight, President-elect Barack Obama nominated Jackson to lead the EPA, and she was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January twenty-third, two thousand nine. During her tenure, she implemented significant policies, including stricter fuel efficiency standards and a robust response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She also recognized carbon dioxide as a public health threat, which empowered the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

Jackson's commitment to environmental health was further demonstrated when she proposed amendments to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards to impose stricter limits on smog pollution. In December two thousand twelve, she announced her decision to step down as EPA Administrator, effective February fifteenth, two thousand thirteen, leaving a legacy of impactful environmental reforms.
