Liu Hui

Liu Hui, a prominent Chinese mathematician born in the year two hundred twenty-five, made significant contributions to the field of mathematics during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He was a descendant of the Marquis of Zixiang from the Eastern Han dynasty and resided in the state of Cao Wei. His intellectual legacy is particularly highlighted by his commentary on the esteemed mathematical text, Jiu Zhang Suan Shu, published in two hundred sixty-three CE.

In his commentary, Liu Hui provided a proof of the Pythagorean theorem, introduced theorems in solid geometry, and improved upon Archimedes's approximation of π. He also developed a systematic method for solving linear equations with multiple unknowns, showcasing his innovative approach to mathematical problems.

Beyond his work on The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, Liu Hui authored Haidao Suanjing, or The Sea Island Mathematical Manual, where he explored geometrical problems and their practical applications in surveying. His dedication to mathematics was evident in his travels, including a visit to Luoyang, where he famously measured the sun's shadow, further demonstrating his commitment to the discipline.
