Liz Phair

Liz Phair, born on April 17, 1967, in New Haven, Connecticut, is a celebrated American singer-songwriter and musician. Raised primarily in the vibrant Chicago area, she pursued her passion for music after graduating from Oberlin College in 1990. Initially attempting to carve out a musical career in San Francisco, Phair soon returned to Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the moniker Girly-Sound. This innovative approach caught the attention of the independent record label Matador Records, leading to a significant breakthrough in her career.

In 1993, Phair released her debut studio album, Exile in Guyville, which garnered widespread acclaim and has since been recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Following this success, she released her second album, Whip-Smart, in 1994, earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Her third album, Whitechocolatespaceegg, was released in 1998, further solidifying her status in the music industry.

After a decade since her debut, Phair's fourth album, Liz Phair, was released in 2003 under Capitol Records. This album marked a shift towards pop rock, attracting a mainstream audience while also drawing mixed reviews from critics. The single “Why Can't I?” achieved notable success, peaking at number thirty-two on the Billboard Hot 100. Following her fifth album, Somebody's Miracle, in 2005, Phair parted ways with Capitol and independently released her sixth album, Funstyle, in 2010.

In 2018, it was announced that Matador Records would release a retrospective set for Exile in Guyville, featuring remastered recordings from her original Girly Sound demo tapes. Phair continued to evolve as an artist, releasing her seventh studio album, Soberish, in 2021. As of 2011, she has sold over three million records worldwide, showcasing her enduring impact on the music scene.
