Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Lluís Martínez i Sistach

Lluís Martínez i Sistach, born on April twenty-ninth, nineteen thirty-seven, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, is a distinguished prelate of the Catholic Church. He is recognized as the Archbishop emeritus of Barcelona, a position he held from two thousand four until two thousand fifteen. Elevated to the rank of cardinal in two thousand seven, Martínez has made significant contributions to the Church throughout his career.

Martínez's early life was rooted in a family of modest means, with his father, Joan Martínez i Puig, working as a commercial representative, and his mother, Maria Sistach i Masllorens, managing the household. He pursued his education at the Marist Brothers' Collegi de la Immaculada in Barcelona before attending the Major Seminary of Barcelona, where he was ordained a priest on September seventeenth, nineteen sixty-one. His academic journey continued at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, culminating in a doctorate in both canon and civil law in nineteen sixty-seven.

His ecclesiastical career began in nineteen eighty-seven when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Barcelona. He subsequently served as Bishop of Tortosa in nineteen ninety-one and became Archbishop of Tarragona in nineteen ninety-seven. In two thousand four, he ascended to the role of Archbishop of Barcelona. His tenure was marked by his vocal opposition to certain legislative measures, particularly those concerning religious liberties in Catalonia.

Martínez's influence extended beyond his archdiocese as he became a member of various offices within the Roman Curia. He was appointed to the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and the Apostolic Signatura by Pope Benedict XVI. His participation in significant events, such as the papal conclave of two thousand thirteen that elected Pope Francis, further solidified his standing within the Church.

After a dedicated service, Pope Francis accepted Martínez's retirement on November sixth, two thousand fifteen. He continues to hold the title of Grand Prior of the España Oriental Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, reflecting his ongoing commitment to the Church and its mission.
