Lobsang Sangay, born on September fifth, nineteen sixty-eight, in Darjeeling, India, is a prominent Tibetan-American politician and lawyer. He has played a significant role in the Tibetan Administration in exile, serving as Kalon Tripa from two thousand eleven to two thousand twelve and later as Sikyong from two thousand twelve to two thousand twenty-one.
The Tibetan Administration was established in nineteen ninety-one, following the fourteenth Dalai Lama's decision to reject calls for Tibetan independence. This pivotal moment led to the Dalai Lama becoming the permanent head of the administration, which oversees the political and administrative functions for Tibetans living in exile.
In March two thousand eleven, the Dalai Lama, at the age of seventy-one, chose to relinquish his political and administrative authority. This decision prompted an immediate update to the Charter of Tibetans in Exile in May of the same year, which repealed all articles related to the political duties of the Dalai Lama.
Educated in international law and democracy at Harvard University, Sangay holds American citizenship and has dedicated his career to advocating for the rights and autonomy of the Tibetan people.
