Lois Duncan

Lois Duncan Steinmetz, born on April 28, 1934, was a prominent American writer and journalist, celebrated for her significant contributions to young-adult fiction. Known simply as Lois Duncan, she emerged as a pioneering figure in the genres of horror, thriller, and suspense, captivating readers with her engaging narratives.

The daughter of professional photographers Lois and Joseph Janney Steinmetz, Duncan began her writing journey at a young age, initially publishing two novels under the pen name Lois Kerry. Her most notable works include the beloved children's book Hotel for Dogs, the chilling I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the thought-provoking Killing Mr. Griffin, all of which have been adapted into films, further solidifying her impact on literature and cinema.

In addition to her novels, Duncan authored several poetry collections and nonfiction works, including the poignant Who Killed My Daughter?, which recounts the tragic unsolved murder of her teenage daughter, Kaitlyn. This heart-wrenching experience led her to receive the prestigious Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 1992, recognizing her exceptional contributions to writing for teens.

Following her daughter's murder, Duncan shifted her focus away from the thriller and horror genres, turning her attention to picture books and novels for young children. Her final published work, a sequel to Who Killed My Daughter? titled One to the Wolves, was released in two thousand thirteen, marking the end of a remarkable literary journey.
