London Breed, born on August 11, 1974, is a prominent American politician who made history as the 45th mayor of San Francisco, serving from 2018 to 2025. Her political journey began on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where she represented District 5 from 2013 to 2018 and held the position of board president from 2015 to 2018.
Raised in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, Breed's commitment to public service was evident early on as she pursued a career in government after completing her college education. She was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2012 and took office in January 2013. Her leadership skills shone through when she was elected president of the Board in 2015, a role that positioned her as the acting mayor following the untimely death of Mayor Ed Lee from December 12, 2017, to January 23, 2018.
Breed's political ascent continued when she won the San Francisco mayoral special election on June 5, 2018. Her election was historic, as she became the first black woman and the second black person, following Willie Brown, to hold the mayoral office in San Francisco. She was officially sworn in as mayor on July 11, 2018, marking a significant milestone in the city's history.
In 2024, Breed sought re-election but faced a challenging race and ultimately lost to Daniel Lurie. Despite this setback, her tenure as mayor and her contributions to the city remain noteworthy, reflecting her dedication to the community she has served.
