Lope de Aguirre

Lope de Aguirre, born in 1510, was a Basque Spanish conquistador whose exploits in South America earned him the notorious nickname El Loco, or 'the Madman.' He boldly styled himself as the 'Wrath of God,' reflecting his fierce and rebellious spirit. Aguirre is most famously remembered for his audacious expedition down the Amazon River, driven by the tantalizing quest for the legendary golden kingdom of El Dorado and the fabled land of Omagua.

In the year fifteen sixty-one, Aguirre's ambition led him to orchestrate a mutiny against the expedition's commander, Pedro de Ursúa. This act of defiance was not merely a power grab; Aguirre declared his intention to return to Peru and overthrow the colonial government of Spain. In a dramatic gesture, he drafted a letter that renounced his allegiance to King Philip II of Spain, effectively declaring war on the Habsburg monarch.
