Lorenzo Fernández

Lorenzo Fernández, affectionately known as El Gallego, was born on May 20, 1900, in Spain and later became a prominent figure in Uruguayan football. His career spanned several esteemed clubs, including Capurro, River Plate, Montevideo Wanderers FC, and C.A. Peñarol, where he showcased his exceptional skills as a center-half in the traditional 2–3–5 formation.

Fernández's contributions to the sport extended beyond club football; he was a vital member of the Uruguay national team. Over the course of his international career, he earned thirty-one caps and netted four goals. His remarkable achievements include winning the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, securing a gold medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics, and triumphing in the Copa America tournaments of 1926 and 1935.

In a memorable moment during the 1929 South American Championship, Fernández demonstrated his versatility by stepping in as an inside-left forward, a position he had not regularly played. His performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he scored a hat-trick against Peru, further solidifying his legacy in the annals of football history.
