A member of the Democratic Party, Sanchez first entered Congress in nineteen ninety-six, achieving a remarkable victory over the long-serving Republican incumbent Bob Dornan by a narrow margin of fewer than one thousand votes. Throughout her tenure, she was known for her affiliation with the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate-to-conservative Democrats.
