Lorie Tarshis

Lorie Tarshis, born on March twenty-second, nineteen eleven, was a prominent Canadian economist whose academic contributions significantly shaped the landscape of economic education in the United States. He is best known for his tenure at Stanford University, where he dedicated much of his career to teaching and developing economic thought.

In nineteen forty-seven, Tarshis authored the groundbreaking textbook, Elements of Economics, which was the first to introduce Keynesian principles into American university curricula. This work was pivotal in disseminating Keynesian economics, making it accessible to a broader audience of students and educators.

However, the reception of Tarshis's textbook was not without controversy. Following accusations of excessive sympathy towards communism by McCarthyist activists, the popularity of Elements of Economics waned. In contrast, Paul Samuelson's Economics, published in nineteen forty-eight, ultimately became the standard bearer for Keynesian thought in the United States.
