Louis Ignarro

Louis Ignarro, born on May thirty-first, nineteen forty-one, is a distinguished American biochemist and pharmacologist renowned for his groundbreaking work on the signaling properties of nitric oxide. His significant contributions to cardiovascular science earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in nineteen ninety-eight, which he shared with Robert F. Furchgott and Ferid Murad.

Currently, Ignarro serves as professor emeritus of pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine's department of molecular and medical pharmacology, a position he has held since nineteen eighty-five. Prior to his tenure in California, he dedicated twelve years to teaching pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. His career also includes a role as a staff scientist in the research department of the pharmaceutical division at CIBA-GEIGY Corporation in New York.

Throughout his career, Ignarro has published numerous research articles and received the Basic Research Prize from the American Heart Association in nineteen ninety-eight, recognizing his exceptional contributions to cardiovascular science. That same year, he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, followed by his induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences the subsequent year. He is often referred to as the 'Father of Viagra' due to nitric oxide's indirect involvement in the drug's action.

In addition to his academic achievements, Ignarro is the founder of the Nitric Oxide Society and serves as the founder and editor-in-chief of Nitric Oxide Biology and Chemistry. He holds a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Columbia University, obtained in nineteen sixty-two, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Minnesota, School of Medicine, awarded in nineteen sixty-six. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health in nineteen sixty-eight.

Beyond his research and teaching, Ignarro is actively involved in various organizations, including serving on the scientific committee of Nicox, a French pharmaceutical company, and as a member of the Board of Directors for Antibe Therapeutics, a Canadian drug discovery company. He has also contributed to Operation USA, a non-profit organization, and previously served on the Nutritional Advisory Board for Herbalife.
