Louis-Joseph Riopel

Louis-Joseph Riopel, born on September sixteenth, eighteen forty-one, in St-Jacques-L'Achigan, Canada East, was a prominent figure in Quebec's political and legal landscape. The son of Louis Riopel and Julie Mercure, he received his education at the Collège de l'Assomption before embarking on a career as a notary under the mentorship of Louis Archambeault. By eighteen sixty-five, he was qualified to practice and established his notarial practice in New Carlisle.

In addition to his legal career, Riopel was deeply involved in public service. He served as the Superintendent of Colonization and Public Works for Bonaventure County from eighteen sixty-nine to eighteen seventy-three, followed by his role as crown lands agent until eighteen eighty. His political journey began when he represented Bonaventure in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from eighteen eighty-one to eighteen eighty-two, before transitioning to the House of Commons of Canada, where he served from eighteen eighty-two to eighteen ninety-one as a Conservative member.

Riopel's commitment to public service extended beyond politics; he was a director of the North West Central Railway and played a significant role in promoting the Baie-des-Chaleurs Railway. After resigning from the Quebec assembly in eighteen eighty-two to pursue a seat in the House of Commons, he ultimately retired from politics in eighteen ninety-one. He married Marie Louise Justine Robitaille in eighteen seventy-five, further intertwining his life with the legal profession through his wife's family.

Louis-Joseph Riopel passed away in New Carlisle at the age of seventy-three, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to both law and public service in Quebec.
